Choosing colours
It’s still a wedding so don’t wear predominantly black or white unless you know it’s acceptable at the wedding you’re attending. Black accessories like this embellished Oscar de la Renta clutch are perfect. Weddings are great because they force us to ditch dowdy colours and go for shades and prints we might normally avoid. It’s a celebration, people!
Florals are perfect, but they can be toned down for fall. Think dusky pinks, blues and purples, with a colour pop from this pink and blue Chanel clutch. Or, go jewel-bright with deep red, royal blue or emerald green.
The dress
Cocktail dresses, a-symmetric styles and structured shifts work well at autumn weddings, but don’t be too buttoned-up. It goes without saying that a longer dress is wedding-appropriate – but that doesn’t mean you can’t show off a bit of shoulder. Bardot styles are ideal, especially if they come with a longer sleeve.
The shoes
Out of season open-toe sandals are a bit of a no-no at an autumn or winter wedding, but don’t despair – your shoes don’t have to be dull. Opt for a velvet, suede or satin shoe for a luxe look, and stick to a classic pump or ankle shoe.
Alternatives
When you don’t want to wear a dress but still want to exude polished perfection, go for a classic wide-leg pant or pencil skirt. You can still add glamour with textures – try suede, silk and leather. And don’t forget the metallics!
Layer-up
You’re going to need a cover-up for warmth so opt either for a structured dress and sheer wrap, or a form-fitting jacket over a loose blouse or camisole. A coordinating cardi and nude tights compliment a vintage tea dress while keeping you toasty.
